Pharma front and center in North Carolina special election
Democrats are spotlighting drug prices in a long-awaited special election taking place today in North Carolina, criticizing the Republican candidate for voting against a bill to reform pharmacy benefit managers.
"When Dan Bishop had the chance to help us, he stood in the way," the ad says against a backdrop of vanishing pill bottles and, eventually, an empty medicine cabinet. The ad from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee highlights Bishop's "no" vote on the PBM bill, which was otherwise unanimously supported. Another depicts Bishop, a state senator, in a superhero mask, labeling him a "hero for the drug companies."
The Democrat — entrepreneur and Marine veteran Dan McCready — has pledged to "take on Big Pharma" and has been eager to talk health care more broadly as he seeks to flip a GOP-held seat. The election in the state's 9th District is a re-do after November's result was tossed in light of voter fraud allegations surrounding a Republican operative there, and is seen as a bellwether for the general election in 2020.
