Democrats' drug pricing protest at the State of the Union
President Trump's State of the Union address last night had no shortage of controversial material. From illegal immigration to abortion to creating a "Space Force," there were any number of moments at which Democrats could have chosen to voice their dissent. But Democratic lawmakers zeroed in on a familiar topic: drug prices.
Trump's muted, passing comments on the need for bipartisan drug pricing legislation engendered an impassioned response from some Democrats, who stood, held three fingers aloft, and loudly chanted "H.R. 3" — referencing the aggressive prescription drug bill they passed in 2019 — for nearly 10 seconds.
Trump's brief remarks, Democrats' protest, and the 13 insulin advocates who joined Democratic lawmakers in the halls of Congress on Tuesday are a sure sign that drug prices aren't going anywhere as a 2020 election issue.
