FDA asking for vaping details from the public
The number of new cases of EVALI — the vaping-linked lung injury — has declined, but as part of health authorities’ response, the FDA is now asking the public for information about e-cigarettes. The agency is looking for details about the products, how they might have been modified, and what kind of substances were added in an attempt to get consumer information that will not appear in scientific papers. Health authorities have identified the compound vitamin E acetate, which can be added to vaping products, as the likely culprit, but the hope is that understanding more about the types of products that were associated with the injuries could prevent additional cases. The FDA has come under fire from some lawmakers who argue regulators have been too slow to take action against e-cigarettes.
