University of California and PLOS announce new publishing deal

The University of California system and the Public Library of Science reached an agreement yesterday that will let UC researchers more easily publish their work in PLOS journals, which are open access. Under the two-year deal, UC libraries will pay the first $1,000 of PLOS' article processing fees. These charges vary among the different PLOS journals, from around $1,600 per research article in PLOS ONE to $3,000 in PLOS Medicine and PLOS Biology. Those who don't have the funds to cover the rest of the fee could request further funding help from UC. The new agreement comes almost a year after the UC system decided not to renew its deal with the publisher Elsevier when the two parties couldn't agree on new terms that would have ensured that articles by UC researchers be freely accessible.
