Covid-19 renews fight over abortion pill restrictions

Nearly 75,000 people have signed a new petition being circulated by the liberal news site Daily Kos arguing that the FDA should waive restrictions requiring in-person doctor visits for women seeking the medical abortion pill, mifepristone. The petition argues it’s critical to lift such restrictions, especially as some states move to shut down abortion clinics as “non-essential” during widespread coronavirus stay-at-home orders. Already England has lifted similar restrictions in response to Covid-19.

Here in the U.S., the petition is the latest in a long-standing fight over mifepristone restrictions. The drug, which blocks a hormone needed to maintain a pregnancy, is covered by a mandated FDA safety system known as a REMS, which requires the drug to be dispensed at a clinic rather than at a retail or mail order pharmacy. The FDA has resisted repeated calls from doctors groups, including the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, to drop those restrictions.
