Mayo Clinic stays on top in hospital rankings
The Mayo Clinic held onto first place in the latest rankings from U.S. News & World Report evaluating more than 4,500 hospitals. Because the survey was conducted before the coronavirus pandemic hit, they do not reflect its impact on hospitals. The highlights:
- Overall rankings: The Mayo Clinic placed first in this year’s honor roll, followed by the Cleveland Clinic and Johns Hopkins Hospital.
- By specialty: The Mayo Clinic won a top-five spot in 13 of the 16 specialties evaluated. The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center ranked No. 1 in cancer, the Cleveland Clinic is No. 1 in cardiology and heart surgery, and the Hospital for Special Surgery is No. 1 in orthopedics.
- Methodology: The report looks at risk-adjusted survival and discharge-to-home rates, patient volume, and quality of nursing, among other measures. This year’s report added a cardiac rating of a minimally invasive alternative to aortic valve surgery.
