So, did Trump enact a 'Most Favored Nation' policy or not?

The drug industry was scrambling last week to convince President Trump he shouldn’t implement a so-called “most favored nation” policy, under which drug makers would be ordered to sell certain high cost drugs at the lowest price they offer in several other countries. Trump promised the order would go into effect at 12:00 midnight Monday if drug makers didn’t come up with a better solution, but that deadline has come and gone and both sides have since been silent.

Both the White House and PhRMA declined to comment Monday on whether the order had been implemented or an offer extended. PhRMA instead sent STAT a statement calling the order “an irresponsible and unworkable policy.”

Drug industry lobbyists told STAT that negotiations with the White House stretched into the weekend. One lobbyist told STAT over the weekend that the drug industry was attempting to negotiate an “extension” on the deadline for implementing the policy so negotiations could continue.

Adding to the confusion: Trump has been talking about the order like it’s already in place. He has repeatedly touted the order in recent days. He claimed on Twitter Saturday night, for example, that he had signed the order “last week” — though it was in July that he announced it, and he still has not yet made it public.
