Still reeling over Sunday’s press conference? We’ve got you covered

Hahn spoke for roughly four minutes during Sunday night’s primetime press conference announcing a new emergency authorization for convalescent plasma, but those are four minutes he might want back. Hahn touted markedly false statistics and sat idly by as Trump personally blamed staff within the FDA for slow walking approval of coronavirus treatments.

Hahn issued a mea culpa Monday evening over his explanation of the data, but he has remained silent regarding Trump's criticism of FDA staffers.

For more analysis on Sunday night’s press conference, and Hahn’s shocking remarks, check out this discussion between STAT’s Matthew Herper and Adam Feuerstein. They explain both why Hahn’s claim about the efficacy of convalescent plasma was so far off and what it means for the independence of the agency going forward.

And if you’re curious about what exactly the FDA authorized, the scientific evidence surrounding it, and what this authorization really means for patients, check out this primer from my colleague, Lev, here.
