The health toll of caregiving in the U.S.
A new Blue Cross Blue Shield report on the state of caregiving in the U.S. reveals how caregivers tend to have lower overall health scores than the general population, a trend that's more pronounced among some racial groups and those of younger age. Nearly 7 million people covered by the company identify as caregivers, according to the new report, and of this group, nearly three-quarters are caregivers for their spouses, while 1 in 5 care for their child. Those ages 38-53, or Gen Xers, make up the largest group of caregivers, followed by baby boomers and millennials. Nearly 21% of millennial caregivers report anxiety, compared to 13% of the general population. And Black and Hispanic caregivers had lower health scores compared to non-caregivers in their racial group and compared to white caregivers.
