As social media companies try to combat the surge of misinformation about the pandemic, one platform has stood out as exemplary in its efforts: Pinterest. The company, which made a name for itself as a place where people could 'pin' ideas about everything from party planning to cooking to fashion, has a multi-pronged approach for battling misinformation: a zero-tolerance vaccine misinformation policy, a team tasked with enforcing it, and a flexible approach that accounts for emerging intel from health authorities. Pinterest's approach stands in stark contrast with those of other platforms, most notably Facebook, which has often cited free speech as a reason for leaving up potentially harmful posts.
