Family caregivers who assist people living with multiple chronic conditions often lack sufficient support, but caregiver apps can help by enhancing care coordination and planning among patients, caregivers and clinicians, according to a scoping review in the Journal of Medical Internet Research. The research, authored by AHRQ researchers and other experts, identified important caregiver needs for information, support and care coordination for caregiving and self-care as well as desired app functionalities and features. Findings can inform developers and researchers in the design and implementation of mHealth apps to improve communication and outcomes of care. More research is needed to address the lack of studies about the specific needs of caregivers of people living with multiple chronic conditions, researchers asserted.
