Dietary Saturated Fat Replacement and Plasma Lipid and Cardiovascular Events
Dietary Saturated Fat Replacement and Plasma Lipid and Cardiovascular Events: The review will facilitate updating the DRIs for dietary fat and fatty acids and will provide additional specificity and evidence-based guidance to optimize plasma lipoprotein profiles, with the goal of lowering CV event risk. It will also allow the DRI Committee to consider applying the recently introduced DRI category, chronic disease risk reduction (CDRR), to dietary fats. The CDRR is “the lowest level of intake for which there was sufficient strength of evidence to characterize a chronic disease risk reduction.

The purpose of this evidence review is to identify and synthesize peer-reviewed and published research available since the last US-Canadian joint dietary guidelines were established regarding effects of total fat intake on generally healthy populations at different life stages with diverse genetic backgrounds, health statuses, and nutritional needs. The goal of this review is to summarize the effects of replacing saturated fats with healthier fats, carbohydrates, or protein on plasma lipids and cardiovascular outcomes in the general population. This will enable dietary recommendations to be aligned with the most current and comprehensive evidence, and may lead to dietary health behaviors that enhance plasma lipids and cardiovascular disease outcomes in the general population.
