Dietary Intake of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids and Plasma Lipid and Cardiovascular Events
Dietary Intake of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids and Plasma Lipid and Cardiovascular Events: This review is intended to provide a summary of evidence to serve as a foundation for the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) to review the DRI values for dietary fat. This effort is part of a joint Working Group initiative between the United States and Canada to review and update DRI values.

(Submission deadline extended until December 27, 2024)
The purpose of this evidence review is to identify and synthesize peer-reviewed and published research available since the last US-Canadian joint dietary guidelines were established regarding effects of total fat intake on generally healthy populations at different life stages with diverse genetic backgrounds, health statuses, and nutritional needs. A systematic review of dietary intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids and plasma lipid concentrations and subsequent cardiovascular (CV events) is critically needed prior to updating the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) values due to substantial advancements in our understanding of the relationships between dietary fatty acids and both plasma lipoproteins and CV events, along with recent high-profile controversies about current dietary fat recommendations.
