How Americans juggle chronic conditions on the job
More than half of people employed in the U.S. report physical chronic health conditions like high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, and asthma — and most of them need to manage the condition during work hours. Despite that, most have not formally disclosed their conditions to their employer, according to a new poll of more than 1,000 part- and full-time working adults by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the de Beaumont Foundation.
The results show that chronic health conditions can often be hidden in the workplace. People say they haven’t told employers about their conditions because they don’t want employers to think less of them, and they’re worried they’ll be passed over for promotions, or that the employer would look for a reason to fire them. More than a third of respondents with chronic conditions said they’ve skipped medical appointments or delayed getting care in the last year because of work.
It’s no wonder that 2025 is looking to be the year of chronic disease. Read STAT’s coverage.
