This 22-minute presentation discusses the progress, ongoing challenges, and possibilities in reducing the vulnerability of children to disasters. Through her experience working directly with children, including a young survivor of Hurricane Katrina, the speaker gives emergency managers five specific ideas to reduce the vulnerability of children to disasters: Ensure that every child attends a safe school; educate children about risk and risk reduction; listen to and involve children so they can help themselves, other children, and adults; encourage children’s ingenuity and creativity; and cultivate anchors, advocates, and strong institutions for children.
