Meet the man behind the latest CRISPR upheaval


He Jiankui unhyperbolically got the whole world’s attention after claiming to have used CRISPR genome editing to alter the DNA of two newborn twins. Now he’s the subject of fascination, recrimination, and at least one investigation.

But who is the scientist behind the most shocking twist in CRISPR’s restless story? As STAT's Rebecca Robbins and Andrew Joseph report, the 34-year-old He wasn't widely known among Western CRISPR experts. Just eight years removed from finishing his PhD, the scientist has quickly made his name with what a peer called a "combination of hubris, naivete, and perhaps a genuine desire to help people in need."
