Nursing home stars don't always reflect safety
Nursing home star ratings don’t necessarily capture the full picture when it comes to patient safety, according to a new analysis. Researchers stacked Nursing Home Compare scores up against data on six patient safety measures and found that nursing homes with higher star ratings didn’t perform any better than those with low ratings when it came to resident falls, urinary-tract infections in long-term care, or pressure sores in short-term care. The takeaway: Putting more of an emphasis on patient safety in nursing home rating could provide a more complete picture of care.
