Inside STAT: How an IBM Watson Health rescue mission crumbled
IBM's Watson Health division has wrestled with a critical issue: Its artificial intelligence software wasn't consistently able to analyze language in patient records. An internal document obtained by STAT shows that in spring 2017, a small team was formed to fix the problem. But the effort didn’t go anywhere — managers at Watson Health declined to invest the time and the money in the project, and most of the employees appointed to it left within a year, according to former employees and online posts. Meanwhile, Watson continued to struggle with reading records, souring client relationships. STAT’s Casey Ross and Ike Swetlitz have the story for STAT Plus subscribers here.
