Your rundown of health care issues on Election Day

Voters headed to the polls today will decide a slew of health care ballot measures. Here’s a look at four key issues up for a vote:
  • Dialysis profits: California residents will vote on a union-backed measure to cap dialysis clinic profits. The dialysis industry has shelled out more than $110 million to defeat Proposition 8.
  • Medicaid expansion: Voters in Utah, Idaho, and Nebraska will decide whether the states should expand their Medicaid programs. And in Montana, there's a proposal on the ballot that would renew funding for Medicaid expansion by raising cigarette taxes. The tobacco industry has fiercely fought the measure.
  • Abortion rights: West Virginia residents will vote on an amendment to clarify nothing in the state's constitution "secures or protects a right to abortion or requires the funding of abortion." In Alabama, residents will vote on a measure to add "right to life" protections to the state's constitution. And in Oregon, voters will decide whether to ban public spending for many abortions.
  • Medical marijuana: Utah and Missouri will vote on whether to legalize medical marijuana.
