Health officials announced a new drug approval, released new data on gun deaths in big cities, and issued an update about a widespread turkey recall. Here’s a rundown:
  • The CDC announced that 74 more people have been sickened since July in a sweeping salmonella outbreak linked to raw turkey products. Since the outbreak began a year ago, 164 people have fallen ill across the U.S., including one death. Health officials haven't pinpointed a common source.
  • The agency also released new data showing that the number of gun suicides and homicides is rising in most of the 50 most populated metropolitan areas in the U.S.
  • The FDA approved a new version of Primatene Mist, an over-the-counter inhaler for asthma. The original version of the drug was pulled off the market seven years ago because the propellant the inhaler used — which depleted the ozone — was banned.
