Study explores suicide risk in incarcerated youth
New research digs into suicide rates among adolescents who are incarcerated, who are at higher risk of suicide than their peers who aren’t in custody. The study looked at suicide deaths among young people ages 10 to 24 between 2003 and 2012. Several suicide risk factors for suicide — including a history of suicide attempts and certain mental health conditions — weren't much different between incarcerated youths and their peers. But those who were incarcerated were less likely to have told someone else about their intentions. The authors say there’s a need for more research into risk and prevention programs that specifically target young incarcerated people.
