'CRISPR babies' scientist acted alone, China says

Chinese investigators have made clear that He Jiankui, the scientist now infamous for CRISPRing the genomes of two baby girls, acted on his own — and could face legal consequences for his actions. He received funding for the experiment without any outside assistance, which violated Chinese regulations. A third embryo that He edited is also gestating, according to a state media report.

He was seeking "personal fame and fortune," according to Xinhua News Agency.
Though it didn’t say which laws in particular were violated, the report did accuse He of concocting an ethical review to help expedite his experiments. China has since mandated that the scientist desist work on his gene editing experiments on human embryos.
