Source: University of Colorado at Boulder, Natural Hazards Center. Published: 10/2018. Power outages following Hurricane Irma in 2017 contributed to the death of at least eight Florida nursing home patients. This research assessed the distribution of emergency power supplies and the role of interagency connections—such as emergency management, fire safety, health care administration, and electricity provider agencies—in regulating temperatures and medical equipment at 12 nursing homes in Florida. The results establish a baseline for the improvement of onsite technology and interagency communication used to minimize future adverse health outcomes associated with extreme temperature exposure.
