Trump meets with advisers on drug costs
Right on the heels of drug makers boosting their list prices at the start of the new year, President Trump met Tuesday with senior officials, including HHS Secretary Alex Azar, to discuss high drug costs. Trump has made calling for lower drug prices a priority, and the meeting is the latest sign that he remains frustrated with the drug industry’s status quo.
Meanwhile, there was a drug pricing twist on Capitol Hill: Democratic Rep. Peter Welch of Vermont, who has long advocated for Medicare to negotiate with drug makers on prices, introduced a bill authorizing that policy with Florida Rep. Francis Rooney, a Republican. It's not clear if the bill will get a vote in the House, and there's a near-zero chance the Republican-controlled Senate would pass it. But Rooney's co-sponsorship could be a sign that a few Republicans are warming to an idea that, until recently, has been controversial even among Democrats.
