Inside STAT: Experimental Ebola vaccine has saved countless lives, says WHO's Tedros
The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has topped 600 cases, making it the second worst on record. But WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who recently returned from a trip to the DRC, tells STAT that the outbreak would be much worse without the experimental Ebola vaccine being used to contain the outbreak. More than 54,000 doses of the vaccine, which is being developed by Merck, have been given so far. One note: That assessment isn't based on modeling calculations, but on the fact that the case count hasn't grown exponentially. STAT's Helen Branswell spoke with the director-general about his visit and how the outbreak efforts are going on the ground. Read here.
