National Minority Health Month 2019
April is National Minority Health Month (NMHM) and the theme is Active & Healthy. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority Health (OMH) will join partners in raising awareness about the important role an active lifestyle plays in staying healthy. Join the Active & Healthy Challenge
This year during National Minority Health Month (NMHM), OMH will encourage regular physical activity and healthy nutrition during the Active & Healthy Challenge. OMH invites teams and individuals to compete in the month-long challenge by logging their physical activity (e.g. brisk walking, running, biking, dancing or swimming) and converting the activities into steps. The challenge, which is co-sponsored by the Louisiana Department of Health’s Bureau of Minority Health Access, begins April 1 and ends at midnight ET on April 30th. According to the HHS Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP), physical activity is key to improving the health of the nation. The 2nd edition of the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommends that adults get 150-300 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each week with muscle-strengthening activities two or more days a week. Children and adolescents ages six to 17 should do 60 minutes or more of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each day and muscle-strengthening at least 3 days a week. Move Your Way To Better Health!
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Move Your Way campaign promotes the recommendations from the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. The guidelines aim to help people live healthier lives through increased physical activity. Physical activity can make daily life better. Better Nutrition, Better Health
Living an Active & Healthy life not only means increasing physical activity, but also having a healthy and nutritious diet. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), less than 1 in 10 children and adults eat the recommended daily amount of vegetables. Poor nutrition can lead to mineral deficiencies and other health issues. National Public Health Week- April 1-7
National Public Health Week (NPHW) is observed during the first week of April and is led by the American Public Health Association (APHA). During this observance, several public health topics are identified to spark conversations on ways that everyone can help in creating the healthiest nation. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), addressing the conditions where people live, learn, work, and play can help promote good health and advance health equity. During NPHW, each day will focus on a particular health topic, and identify ways in which everyone can make a difference on that topic.
