Injuries from cosmetic products send thousands of kids to the ED
Personal care and cosmetic products — including lotions and fragrances — send children under the age of 5 to emergency departments every two hours, a new study finds. Here’s more:
- The design: Researchers looked at nearly 65,000 children who were treated in EDs between 2002 and 2016 for cosmetic-related injuries.
- The findings: Nail care, hair care, and skin care products each made up about a quarter of the injuries. Nearly 60% of the kids who were injured were under the age of 2, and poisoning was overwhelmingly the most common diagnosis for the injuries.
- The takeaway: Parents may not be aware of an American Academy of Pediatrics recommendation that cosmetics and personal products ought to be locked away like medicines, the authors write.
