Experts warn U.S. travelers to Europe about measles

CDC experts are warning U.S. residents traveling to Europe to take precautions against the continent’s measles problem. Europe saw more than 41,000 measles cases in the first half of 2018 alone, and low vaccination rates are driving these numbers in countries including the Ukraine, Greece, and Italy. As the most popular travel destination worldwide, the prevalence of measles in Europe not only increases the risk to inadequately vaccinated travelers but also to people back in the U.S. There are currently seven measles outbreaks in the U.S., with more than 1,000 cases, and many of the outbreaks seem to have been caused by international travelers. People should be up to date on their vaccinations, the CDC experts write, and health care professionals should also be on high alert for those who have been traveling in Europe.
