Majority of people would consider becoming living donors
A new survey asked more than 4,600 Americans about their attitudes toward liver transplants and found that 70% of people said they would consider becoming living donors. Here’s more from the survey:
- Priorities: Nearly 40% believe that people who need a new organ because of drug or alcohol abuse should be of lower priority on transplants.
- Access: Half the respondents thought that being wealthy or having connections would likely get someone an organ sooner.
- Organ shortage: Nearly 20% thought that if they were signed up to be organ donors, doctors wouldn’t save their life in case of a grave illness or injury. And 5% of people think that there are enough organ donors, even though nearly 3,000 people each year die waiting for a liver.
