U.K. physicians dissatisfied with pay, spend a third of their time on paperwork
More than two-thirds of general practitioners in the U.K. and about 60% of specialists there are dissatisfied with their salary, according to a new report. Here’s more:
- The context: GPs make an average of around $131,000, while specialists make around $146,000. GP salaries have seen a dip since 2016, and despite a 2% pay raise for National Health Services doctors last year, there are concerns about both groups seeing lower pay.
- Reconsidering careers: Some 40% of those surveyed would choose another profession if they were starting over or recommend a medical career to their children, owing to the demands of the job.
- Time management: Most spend about 33 hours a week with patients, with 15 hours dedicated to administrative work. Although female GPs spend more time with individual patients, they spend less time overall on patient care than their male counterparts.
