Trump's biggest drug pricing idea has a major flaw: Conservatives hate it
The ultra-conservative group Americans for Tax Reform has run ads imploring President Trump not to be a "Bernie Bro." Other right-wing advocacy groups, like FreedomWorks and the American Conservative Union, have used similarly tough language about "importing socialist drug prices."
It's all part of a major and ongoing skirmish in Republican policy spheres, in which Trump is fighting to cap some drug payments based on foreign prices and conservative groups normally aligned with the White House are fiercely pushing back. And to make the dynamic stranger still, a version of Trump's idea has support from most Democratic 2020 candidates — namely Sen. Bernie Sanders.
Earlier this month, tensions spilled over at a meeting the White House called among conservative health policy advocates, Lev reports. Joe Grogan, the White House's top policy adviser, had the toughest words for the assembled policy minds: "The president will not be outflanked on the left on drug prices." More here.
