Inside STAT: Vaccine coalition unveils ambitious plan to immunize 300 million children
Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, has an ambitious five-year plan to help an additional 300 million children get vaccinated between 2021 and 2025. But to get there, it needs financial support. At an event in Japan today, the organization announced that it is seeking $7.4 billion for its next operational period. But before countries and donors can work in the request into their own budgets, they want to see what Gavi will do with the money. Some $800 million will be put toward the organization’s ongoing efforts to rid the world of polio, while an additional $150 billion will go towards stockpiling Ebola vaccine. “We will now meet with individual countries and discuss their willingness to provide financing,” Gavi CEO Seth Berkley told STAT’s Helen Branswell.
