A doctor finds his own cure
David Fajgenbaum nearly lost his life, five separate times, thanks to a rare disorder called Castleman disease. But the physician, whose first flare up came when he was still in medical school, delved deep into the biology of a condition that toes the line between cancer and autoimmune disease — and found his own treatment. It’s an existing drug, sirolimus, that had previously not been used to treat Castleman.
He sat down with STAT’s Matthew Herper to discuss his unique journey of drug discovery — and chat about his new book, called “Chasing my Cure.”
