Family lawsuits of the rich and famous
It’s like a playbook out of HBO’s "Succession:" The real estate tycoon known best for metamorphosing Cambridge into a biotech hotspot just lost a major legal battle against his son. Joel S. Marcus, who runs Alexandria Real Estate Equities, accused his oldest son, Steven, of trademark infringement and unfair competition.
Steven Marcus, after all, runs two London-based companies meant to house life sciences firms in Europe. He allegedly used an image of the Alexandrian lighthouse in emails to venture capitalists in California, an emblem used by his father’s firms, in efforts to drum up business. But a U.S. district court judge ruled that her court has no jurisdiction, since Steven Marcus’s companies operate in Europe, and Steven lives in London.
None of this, of course, that the Marcus family wars are at an end, as the Boston Globe writes.
