NEW Biosimilar Educational Materials for Patients - Drug Information Update

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is pleased to release new educational materials for patients about biosimilar medications.

The agency developed a new webpage for patients and an infographic to help increase awareness of and understanding about these important types of medications. The materials:

• Provide the basic definitions of: biological medications, biosimilar medications, and other terms to facilitate understanding the relationship between biosimilars and the original (reference) medications they are compared to
• Increase awareness that FDA-approved biosimilar medications are safe and effective medications for treating many illnesses such as chronic skin and bowel diseases, arthritis, kidney conditions, and cancer
• Contain details on how biosimilar medications can benefit patients
