Pharma panics as Washington tries to bring drug manufacturing to the U.S.

The drug industry’s biggest challenge since drug pricing

The drug industry has been busy for weeks trying to combat a growing push by lawmakers of all political stripes to decrease America’s dependence on China for drugs, and to bring more manufacturing back to the United States. The challenges keep on mounting: There are roughly 20 bills currently floating around Capitol Hill on the topic, and some are pretty striking, like a bill by Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) that would block the government from buying any drugs made with components sourced from China.



I spoke to representatives from all three major drug industry lobbying groups, as well as countless other outside lobbyists, and one thing was very, very clear: The drug industry is taking this push seriously, and hard at work trying to chart an alternative course that would scratch lawmakers’ itch to do something on this highly controversial topic without totally upending their business model.
