Police blotter

Surrogacy. A 40-year-old woman and her 37-year-old husband have been convicted in Iowa after smuggling a Guatemalan girl across the Mexican border to be a surrogate mother. Last year Cristobal Francisco-Nicolas and Amy Francisco arranged for the 17-year-old girl and her father to make their way to Sioux City. The husband “naturally inseminated”, ie raped, the girl several times before she escaped and was found by police.
Sperm donation. An Indian sperm donor has been jailed after attempting to extort money from the woman he helped to conceive. Nagoor Meeran, 45, acted as a sperm donor for a 36-year-old woman bank manager in Chennai who was a friend of his wife. The woman, who was separated from her husband, had twin girls in 2017 and paid Meeran about US$17,000. Later on he threatened to kill her children unless she paid him another $33,000. Meeran was convicted of outraging the modesty of women, abuse, trespass, and criminal intimidation.
Rehoming children. YouTube influencer Myka Stauffer has startled her fans by revealing that she and her husband have 'rehomed' their adopted five-year-old autistic son Huxley. The couple, who have four children of their own, adopted Huxley from China in 2017. However, he apparently proved to be too challenging for their parenting skills. The Stauffers recently placed him with a new adopted family. Police in Ohio are investigating the matter, but there does not appear to be anything amiss with the process. Myka lost about 2% of her YouTube subscribers and a few sponsors after she posted a video explaining the situation.

After the brutal killing of black man George Floyd in Minneapolis by police on May 25, demonstrations with tens of thousands of people have erupted across the United States and around the world, from Berlin to Sydney. A common sentiment reported in the American media is that “black people are dying in twin epidemics of coronavirus and racism”.
Whether #BlackLivesMatter or public health should be prioritised is sure to be the most consequential bioethics issue of the year. My guess is that hundreds, if not thousands, of lives are at stake. What do you think?
