Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory strips James Watson's name from graduate school

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York announced on Friday that it was removing biologist James Watson's name from its graduate school for biological sciences. The school was named for Watson in 1999 given his contributions to CSHL and to science, but since then, "Dr. Watson has expressed views on race which are incompatible with CSHL’s mission and values," a statement reads. A committee evaluating the situation also decided to restore the school's original name, the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory School of Biological Sciences. This is the latest action that CSHL has taken to distance itself from the disgraced scientist. In January 2019, the institution stripped Watson of his remaining honorary positions at CSHL after a PBS documentary revealed that he refused to recant racist comments he had previously made.
