A contentious new addition to Hahn’s inner circle

David Gortler will serve as a senior advisor to FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn, his former employer, the Heartland Institute, announced Monday. Gortler, who previously served as a senior policy advisor at the Heartland Institute, is the latest in a series of controversial staffers added to the FDA’s ranks.

Gortler has made a name for himself for his at times scathing critiques of the agency. In a December 2016 op-ed for STAT, he advocated for widespread firing of FDA staff.

“The FDA would benefit from a good personnel sweep,” Gortler wrote. “The agency has its share of petty people who have personal agendas against fellow FDA employees and/or pharmaceutical companies.”

He too has suggested that FDA employees “abuse” small pharma companies, and has suggested drug makers be able to publicly rate their experience with the FDA.

But Gortler is sure to anger the pharmaceutical industry, too. In that same op-ed, he advocated for the creation of a U.S. version of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, the U.K. regulator maligned by the drug industry, which says it makes it harder for patients to access new treatments.
