Can the FDA’s integrity survive President Trump?
The purportedly apolitical FDA has had presidential run-ins in the past, whether over birth control, tobacco, or drug approval standards. But President Trump’s all-out attack on the agency makes those look tame, and it threatens to inflict permanent damage on the FDA’s reputation with the American public.
As STAT’s Lev Facher reports, FDA officials and agency experts are deeply concerned by a series of White House moves in recent weeks, including Trump’s claim that agency staff are part of a “deep state” political conspiracy to harm his re-election campaign and the decision to appoint a right-wing journalist as the FDA’s top spokesperson.
The fear is that the FDA will get cajoled into approving treatments and vaccines for Covid-19 that are either unsafe or ineffective. Or that the White House will tarnish the agency’s reputation such that FDA approval, considered a global gold standard, will be met with skepticism by a wary public.
