Hospital admissions of patients needing a first-time hip replacement will reach 110,000 per quarter by the end of 2012, or 440,000 for the entire year, according to projections by AHRQ. The cost of caring for these patients will average $19,000 per patient. Two-thirds of the first-time hip replacement admissions are due to osteoarthritis.
