Effective with grant application receipt dates after February 5, 2012 (March 5, 2012 for R01 resubmissions), AHRQ is implementing a budget limit of $250,000 total (direct and indirect) costs per year for large research (R01, R18) grant applications.

The one exception to the budget limit indicated above is for AHRQ health information technology (health IT) focused Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs). These include the following program announcements:
Understanding Clinical Information Needs and Health Care Decision Making Processes in the Context of Health Information Technology (IT) (R01) (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-11-198.html).
Understanding User Needs and Context to Inform Consumer Health Information Technology (IT) Design (R01) (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-11-199.html).
For these two health IT focused FOAs, the total budget limit will remain as indicated in the opportunity. Projects may contain a budget of up to $500,000 in total annual costs.
For all large or recurring conference grant applications (R13) AHRQ is implementing a total cost budget limit of $50,000 per year, effective with grant application receipt dates after February 22, 2012.
The existing AHRQ budget limits of $100,000 total costs for small research (R03) grant applications and $50,000 direct costs for small conference (R13) grant applications remain unchanged.
This budget limit is being implemented for all competing large research and conference grant applications submitted to AHRQ, including new, renewal, resubmission, and revision applications, unless otherwise indicated in a specific FOA. The new grant budget limits for large research, demonstration, and large conference grant applications will be in effect until further notice from AHRQ.
