DATA AS OF DEC. 4 ON CONFIRMED AND PROBABLE EBOLA CASES, BROKEN DOWN BY GENDER AND AGE GROUP. (WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION)
The case counts in the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo now stand at 471 cases and 273 deaths. A new WHO report unpacks some devastating details about the outbreak:
  • Children 14 and younger make up one-quarter of the cases. It’s thought they’re getting infected in clinics when they are brought in for malaria care.
  • Of the cases, 27 have been children under the age of 1, and 21 of those children have died. Nine of the infected infants were less than 1 month old.
  • Among the cases, there were 18 pregnant women and seven women who were breastfeeding or had recently delivered.
