Type 2 diabetes patients diagnosed at younger ages are at a higher risk of hospitalization
New research suggests that people who are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at a younger age are at a higher risk of being hospitalized for mental health conditions than their peers diagnosed later in life. Researchers in Hong Kong dug into the data on two cohorts of Chinese adults with type 2 diabetes and also found that patients who were diagnosed before age 40 were also more likely than other type 2 diabetes patients to be hospitalized for their infections, cardiovascular problems, and their diabetes. The study doesn’t show cause and effect. But the authors say it points to the need for new ways to identify and support young people with type 2 diabetes who might need mental health care.
