Inside STAT: Climate change is affecting health. Leaders must act, former surgeons general say
In a new First Opinion for STAT, two former U.S. surgeons general are warning that urgent action is needed to address the growing threat of climate change to public health in the U.S. The health harms from climate change run the gamut, from extreme heat that can cause heat stroke and dehydration to hurricanes that can claim lives and expose people to toxic substances. Climbing temperatures and extreme weather can also make it easier for food and water to become contaminated. "No matter where Americans live, climate change — through hurricanes, wildfires, heat, flooding, and the spread of disease — is harming our health, just as it is harming the health of people around the globe," they write.
