Final Recommendation Statement: Ocular Prophylaxis for Gonococcal Ophthalmia Neonatorum The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force released today a final recommendation statement on ocular prophylaxis for gonococcal ophthalmia neonatorum. "The Task Force continues to recommend that all newborns are given antibiotic ointment to prevent gonococcal ophthalmia neonatorum,” says Task Force member and pediatrician Michael Silverstein, M.D., M.P.H. “The medicine is safe and highly effective at preventing this serious eye infection and its devastating consequences, including blindness.”
