American Cancer Society looks to reduce cancer deaths by 40% by 2035
The American Cancer Society wants to reduce cancer mortality by 40% in the next 15 years. Reaching the 2035 goal could lead to 1.3 million fewer cancer deaths, and some 123,000 fewer cancer deaths in 2035 alone. The ACS also set goals for four of the most common cancers, which account for nearly half of all cancer deaths: the organization wants to reduce lung, breast, colorectal, and prostate deaths by between 40% and 55%.
At the same time, a new study finds that the number of people requiring chemotherapy as a first-line treatment will rise by more than 50% by 2040, and the authors conclude that “strategies are urgently needed to equip the global health force to enable safe treatment of current and future patients.”
