Could an emergency declaration over Ebola make a bad situation worse?
The WHO last month stopped short of declaring the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo a global health emergency, but it’s still being hotly debated whether such a declaration could help or hurt the situation. As of Sunday, there had been 1,705 cases and more than 1,124 deaths. Some say that the emergency declaration will hasten the response to the outbreak, while others say that an emergency response is already underway but what’s missing is the financial support to fight the disease. The debate comes amid an ongoing struggle on the part of the Congolese health ministry and the WHO to contain the virus since the outbreak was declared in August.
