Firearms killed 1.4 million young men in countries with most gun-related deaths
After watching a segment on the NRA on “The Patriot Act” this week, a new study on firearm mortality in the countries with the highest burden — U.S., Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil — caught my eye. Between 1990 and 2015, some 1.4 million men ages 15-34 were killed in gun-related deaths in the four countries — nearly half of the 2.5 million such deaths worldwide. The vast majority of the deaths were in Brazil and the U.S. The study also found that gun-related mortality is strongly associated with race and education level: Black men in the U.S. with a high school education or less were at the highest risk of mortality across all ages and countries.
