India’s PM sails to re-election. Here’s what that could mean for science

I've been following the elections back home in India closely, and the latest results suggest that incumbent Prime Minister Narendra Modi will stay in that role. But what his reelection could mean for science is unclear. For one, Modi and his party have stoked anti-intellectual sentiment and discrimination against minority groups, which caused some 200 Indian scientists to pen a letter last month asking voters to reject these sentiments. Their letter also included concerns over research funding: Although Modi’s campaign platform included promises of scientific advances, there is little mention of how it will be paid for. The party that Modi represents has also peddled pseudoscience — including promoting various cow products to treat ailments — and some scientistsalso worried that endorsing such claims could be detrimental to the country.
